Nearly $23 Million for Teacher and Student Laptop Replacements Approved by Fairfax County School Board
FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — On October 22, the Fairfax County School Board approved a $22,940,060 expenditure for teacher laptop computer replacements and expanding FCPSOn to include new laptops for third, fourth, and fifth graders. The purchase is made possible thanks to additional coronavirus relief funds.
“This critical investment updates the laptops younger students need to access dynamic academic content and engage with their teachers and peers,” said Karl Frisch, Providence District Representative on the Fairfax County School Board. “These additional coronavirus relief dollars will also replace the aging laptops used by our educators who have done a phenomenal job with distance learning during these challenging times.”
In March, the School Board approved the expansion of FCPSOn beyond high school to include middle schools. Before these expansions, the Board adopted a proposal from Frisch that requires the school division to develop a system for providing parents with the ability to monitor screen-time and application usage on these devices. Additionally, the Board approved a proposal from Sully District Representative Stella Pekarsky that requires the division to develop a clear strategic plan for FCPSOn with objectives, benchmarks, and metrics.
At its core, FCPSOn is designed to provide students with equitable access to meaningful learning experiences and technology to support learning. Each student receives an FCPS-issued laptop for use at school and home to access dynamic resources and participate in learning tailored to the student’s individual needs.
